AlertOC is a mass notification system designed to keep San Juan Capistrano residents and businesses informed of emergencies and certain community events.
By registering with AlertOC, time-sensitive voice messages from the City of San Juan Capistrano may be sent to your home, cell or business phone. Text messages may also be sent to cell phones, e-mails and hearing-impaired receiving devices. By submitting your contact information, you will be kept informed of local, wide-spread or regional emergencies affecting your community.
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU REGISTER. You are not required to enter more than one phone number. You are not required to enter any e-mail addresses. However, if you have more than one phone or at least one e-mail address, this allows the system to reach out to all these contacts to inform you of an emergency situation. The first telephone number that you list is noted as the primary contact number. If a non-emergency notification is sent out, this is the only contact that will be used. Whereas, in an emergency situation, all contact information listed will be used for notification.
An emergency notification database is maintained in our area by AT&T. It contains all listed and unlisted landline telephone numbers. There are no cell phones or e-mails listed in this data base. AlertOC represents a second data base for emergency notification, which can include your cell phone number and e-mail address. This database can only be developed through self-registration. Since the AT&T database is limited to landlines only, it is VERY IMPORTANT for you to self-register with AlertOC.
This is how to sign-up for AlertOC notification. Begin by clicking http://bos.ocgov.com/alertoc/alertoc.asp. This will open to a map of Orange County. Click the map on San Juan Capistrano. This will open to a page that asks you to register as a resident or a business. If you want to register for both, you must repeat the process from the beginning. After you click on resident and/or business, a window opens that asks you to type in your name, address, and up to three phone numbers and two e-mail addresses. It also allows you the option to enter a phone number for text messaging and for the deaf and hard of hearing.
This same page allows you to select messages in English or Spanish. At the bottom of this page click on “Add My Contact Info.” If any of the information is missing or incorrect, the page will repeat with the following statement, “Some information was missing or invalid. Please review the items marked with a red asterisk.” If everything is correct, the next window that opens will ask you to confirm your contact information or make edits. The next window asks you to enter the characters as you see them in the image below, then click the “Next button.” The characters are letters and numbers. The letters are case sensitive, so enter them as capital or lower-case letters. The last window to open is confirming your address. Some addresses are not listed in the database. Don’t worry. You have the options of using the address you have selected, the address that the system has selected, or to re-enter a corrected address. This concludes the registration process. If you included an e-mail address, you will receive a confirmation of your registration. The whole process should only take about five minutes.
