The Community Development Department provides information and advisory services to decision makers and the public regarding the growth and development of the community to ensure balanced physical development.
The Community Development Department has three divisions; Planning, Building and Safety, and Code Enforcement. The Planning division processes current and long-range development applications in accordance with the City's adopted General Plan and zoning regulations and provides staff support to the City Council, Planning Commission, Cultural Heritage Commission, Design Review Committee, Zoning Administrator, and Environmental Administrator. The Building and Safety division reviews and approves building plans, issuance of building permits, and inspection of buildings during and after construction. The Code Enforcement division responds to potential violations of the City of San Juan Capistrano Municipal Code.
The department is also responsible for managing the City's preservation and maintenance of the City's historic structures.
