Temporary Bike Path Detours

San Juan Creek Flood Control Channel Improvements

The County of Orange is the lead agency for an important infrastructure project that will enhance flood protection by making improvements to the levees along the San Juan Creek flood control channel. This $33 million project is located in San Juan Capistrano and Dana Point, running along San Juan Creek from Stonehill Drive to approximately 2,100 feet upstream on the west side of the levee and 6,000 feet upstream on the east side of the levee. The project involves the installation of sheet piles with steel anchor columns and tension cables, construction of a reinforced concrete pile cap, construction of reinforced masonry block flood walls, and installation of modified guard cable fencing. The project also includes the reconstruction of the asphalt bike trail along the west side of the channel. Construction is scheduled to begin in September 2017, with completion in June 2019. See our Project Overview and Map (PDF). More information can be found by visiting Orange County Public Works, by emailing Orange County, or calling 714-245-4500.

Important: West Side Closure (Phase 6) is estimated from September 2017 to June 2018. This is the phase that impacts the bike route.

Railroad Bridge Replacement over San Juan Creek

The Southern California Regional Rail Authority in partnership with the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) is planning to replace the 100-year-old railroad bridge over San Juan Creek near the southeast corner of the City's Groundwater Recovery Plant and to the east of Descanco Park. The current bridge is in need of repair due to its age and condition. The existing bridge will remain in place until a new bridge just to the west is constructed.

During construction of the new bridge, it will be necessary to close the existing bikeway that extends east of the I-5 Freeway to the trail along San Juan Creek, which is anticipated to occur June 2022 through December 2024. To provide a continuous bikeway during construction, a detour will be installed. The detour will begin on Avenida Padre, continue on Camino Capistrano, turn left on Del Obispo Street, enter the Trabuco Creek trail levee, and then continue south. See our Detour Map (PDF).
